“Fireflies Are Found in the Dark Too”

This is a quote from a book I read and unfortunately I don’t remember which book it was. It is a great analogy though of how we can find light and beauty in almost any situation we find ourselves in.

It seems like human nature to immediately label something as good or bad. Maybe that is how we make sense of things around us. It isn’t the labeling that is necessarily the problem or issue, but it is the focus we choose in the situation we label as good or bad.

When we find ourselves in the midst of change, our experience of that change is largely determined by what we are looking at. Is it good? Is it bad?

I recently was denied a visa to live in Colombia. Without the visa I cannot live in this country for more than 6 months in any calendar year. My plan was to continue living here while I build and grow my coaching practice. So is this good or bad that my visa was denied?

It depends on what I choose to focus on.

I could say it is bad because now I have to decide where I am going to live. My options are returning to Ecuador, moving back to the US, or finding some interim place to go.

Each of these options have pros and cons, and some seem filled with more cons than pros at this moment. All of them are definitely outside of what my future plans included. I am in the midst of a change.

What I have decided to focus on is what I can do with my remaining time here. I can continue to work hard and build my coaching practice, continue to practice my Spanish with my Spanish speaking friends, and appreciate the culture and life experience I am having in this country.

I also have decided to be open to how the universe may be guiding me to “my best situation.” Opportunities abound everywhere. Maybe a great one is waiting for me somewhere else.

Instead of labeling this change as good or bad, I am just choosing to focus on the fireflies in the darkness. Beauty exists wherever we find ourselves. Love is present in even the most difficult of situations. Light can be found to light our way forward.

We are only required to look for it, turn our focus toward it.

Where are the fireflies in what you are facing today?
